Self-censorship

Tehran's 21st International Book Fair inaugurated on May 1 at Tehran's Prayers Ground (Mosalla).
Iran's culture minister had urged writers to self-censor their books if they want to be published in the Islamic republic, which applies strict vetting on literature and other arts. "This is what we ask publishers and writers, you are aware of the vetting code, so censor pages which are likely to create a dispute," conservative minister Mohammad Hossein Safar Harandi told a news conference.
All publications in Iran must be approved by the ministry of culture and Islamic guidance, and publishers have complained of tighter censorship on new books since President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad came to power in 2005.

Exporting the revolution

Ex-president Mohamad Khatami was under fire from hardliners after comments interpreted as accusing Iran's clerical leaders of supporting insurgents in the Middle East.
In his speech, Khatami referred to the ambition of Iran's revolutionary leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini to export the 1979 Islamic revolution around the world, but expressed fear this wish was being distorted. "What did the imam (Khomeini) mean by exporting the revolution?" he asked in the speech to university students in the northern province of Gilan.
"Did he mean that we take up arms, that we blow up places in other nations and we create groups to carry out sabotage in other countries? The imam was vehemently against this and was confronting it," he added.

Iran ban on 'Western' hairstyles !

Iranian police had warned barbers not to give men Western hairstyles or use make up on them.
The move is part of an unusually fierce crackdown on what is known locally as bad hijab, or un-Islamic clothing, that this year is also targeting men.
Hair stylists have been warned that they could lose their licences if they do not comply.
Police say that as well as avoiding Western hairstyles and make up, barbers should not pluck customers' eyebrows.
Some young boys in Iran sport very wild hair styles, using gel to make their long hair stand on end in a fashion not seen in other countries.

Iran's parliamentary election

The next Iran's parliamentary election is expected to be held on March 14. About 40 percent of the 7,200 people who have registered to run in Iran's parliament election "have a record" with the authorities, an indication they would not be allowed to run.
The result of the election will have no direct impact on who is president, or on policies such as Iran's nuclear program, which is ultimately determined by Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Belief in and commitment to Islam and the Islamic Republic of Iran, allegiance to the Constitution and Velayat-e Faqih, having good physical health, holding at least a master's degree or its equivalent, lack of criminal records and aged between 30 and 75 are the terms for the candidates.
